Color Power

May 3, 2018 by HAWC

Color has an effect on our subconscious. According to Color Psychology, red is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination, passion, desire, and love. The use of red enhances human metabolism, increases heart rate, and raises blood pressure. On the other hand, white is associated with light, goodness, innocence, and purity. The use of white signifies safety, purity, and cleanliness.

All colors seem to have some effect on our subconscious and that effect should be considered when selecting a color scheme for a room or outfit. Did you know that red attracts the most attention, orange is associated with joy, babies cry more in yellow rooms, green has great healing power, purple conveys wealth, white can represent a successful beginning, and black is considered a prestigious color?

The right color choice can change your mood and the mood of the people around you. So, choose your colors wisely; go ahead and upgrade your closet with some powerful colors or upgrade the paint in that dull room!

Reusing Store Jars

May 3, 2018 by HAWC

Finished that spaghetti sauce or coconut oil? Don’t toss the glass jar; instead, reuse the jar with these tips.

1. Use the blow dryer to heat the glue and remove the label
2. Use oil on a paper towel to remove any excess glue from the jar
3. Wash the jar well with soap and warm water

Use the jar to serve cocktails or to store different things like shredded cheese and add a label to easily identify your stored item.

Thoughts of Fast Food

April 21, 2018 by Health Affixed

When I don’t bring lunch to work, I get "Fast Food." Every restaurant has healthier options on the menu and/or the restaurant allows the customer to remove unhealthy ingredients.

You control what is delivered to your office or your table. If you eat out, eat out as well as you can. If you order wings, opt for a side salad instead of fries.

Rule of thumb: add vegetables to every order and eat your vegetables first or contemporaneously.

Weakness: Dessert

April 21, 2018 by HAWC

If you have the room, get the dessert. The choice to get dessert is an empowering one that sometimes requires planning and determination.

If there is a particular dessert that you’ve wanted to try, then go to the restaurant with the dessert in mind. Eat a very light meal and order the dessert. Share the dessert with the table and eat only as much as you need to satisfy your craving. Then, stop and box it or leave it.

Just like that, you had your cake and ate it too…without the guilt. One dessert never sabotaged a diet, but skipping the dessert and rewarding yourself with a hefty entrée is counterproductive and unsatisfying.

Thoughts of Cheesecake Crusts

April 21, 2018 by Health Affixed

A cheesecake recipe usually includes the recipe for the crust. The ingredients for the crust tend to include cookies. However, if you are making a healthier cheesecake, you should opt for a healthier crust.

It was a surprise to find a cheesecake crust recipe that did not require cookies. Because I did not have all of the ingredients on hand, I made some substitutions and created the Coconut Pecan Cheesecake Crust that is available on the THA Recipes page. It is a great recipe and a healthier alternative to the cookie based cheesecake crust. Use it and share it.
