Theater: When thinking about visiting the theater in New York, most people make a point to see a Broadway play. However, there are also many other opportunities in New York to enjoy the theater. The best thing you can do is plan ahead.
Tips
- Free Plays in Central Park: You may stumble upon a student production in the middle of Central Park or you can pay a visit to one of the public theater performances. To score a ticket to Shakespeare in the Park, you should visit the Public Theater site and click Tickets. Note: If you chose to wait in line, bring a blanket to sit on and a fully charged cell phone or a book to read. Also, plan to arrive at least 3 hours before the evening show and, perhaps, even earlier for very popular or last showings.
- Cheap Broadway Tickets (Rush Tickets & Daily Lotteries): You can purchase rush tickets at certain specific times and locations. Rush tickets are discount tickets. Visit the Playbill site for more information. Another option for cheap show tickets is the daily lottery. You have to enter the lottery at a specific time each day and there is a limited number of entries. Download the TKTS and/or TodayTix App for more info.
- AMC in Time Square: It is one of the biggest movie theaters and there are many events held there including the New York Latino Film Festival which was presented by HBO in 2019 and was an absolute hit among attendees. To learn more, visit the NYLFF
- The Nitehawk Cinema: One of the most interesting dine-in theaters. A fun fact is that it was the first theater in New York City to offer table service. In September 2019, the theater honored the life of literary powerhouse Toni Morrison when it showed Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am.
